We've stayed at the Pono Kai many times and we love it there. Buildings A, B, C & D are oceanfront. My favorite is Building D (lower north end unit), but I did stay in Building A in 2009. At the time, the seawall was in bad shape, but was supposed to be repaired by the county sometime between last fall and the beginning of this year. Hopefully it was.
We have always enjoyed our stays at the Pono Kai. The rooms are not luxurious, but they are large with nice kitchens, great views, beautiful grounds, and lots of propane grills on site. The pool is small, but I prefer the ocean anyway. And the staff, when approached with respect and a smile, has always bent over backwards for us. I always say, you get what you give. I keep coming back and I'll be back in 2012.
